WHAT’S A TINTYPE?

A tintype is a one of a kind, hand crafted photo made on a metal plate. The process is entirely handmade and these plates are one of one. This unique process dates all the way back to the 1850s! Tintypes are perfect for commemorating events such as weddings, engagements, birthdays and anniversaries. When you come into the studio for a portrait you also get a first hand look at this 160 year old process from start to finish.
The Process
A chemical called collodion is poured on a metal plate, sensitized in silver nitrate, exposed, and developed in a darkroom. After the plate is developed, it is vigorously washed and then dried. After the tintype is dried it gets a coat of varnish making it extremely archival. We still have tintypes around from the 1850s!
